What should I consider when hiring privately?
Hiring a caregiver directly may make you a household employer, depending on the working arrangement. Consider these responsibilities before deciding:
- Work-related injuries: Check workers’ compensation requirements and who carries the coverage.
- Unemployment insurance: Household employers may need to register, report wages and pay applicable employment taxes.
- Payroll taxes and records: Consider withholding, employer contributions, payroll reporting and year-end tax forms.
- Theft and property damage: Ask what bonding or insurance is in place and what losses it covers.
- Care-related liability: Check whether professional liability coverage applies to the services provided.
- Transportation: Confirm driver qualifications and how the vehicle’s insurance and any other coverage apply.
All Heart employs its caregivers and manages its agency payroll and employment coverage. When comparing care options, ask who employs the caregiver and who handles these responsibilities.
Answers about licensing and protection
Search California’s official Community Care Licensing facility search using our Home Care Organization license number, 374700064. Licensing is administered by the California Department of Social Services. The verification link above takes you to the state search; contact our office if you need help finding the record.
Licensing establishes state oversight and requirements for home care organizations. Our agency’s responsibilities include caregiver screening, background clearance and California Home Care Aide registration; training and supervision; client rights; complaint procedures; record-keeping; and health and safety practices. Explore our Caregiver Selection Process and Caregiver Training pages for more detail.
An employee dishonesty bond addresses specified dishonest acts, such as covered employee theft. Insurance policies address other eligible incidents, including covered work-related injuries, professional liability, general liability and auto liability. Bonding and insurance serve different purposes; neither promises payment for every loss. Contact our office about the coverage relevant to your question.
All Heart caregivers are W-2 agency employees, not 1099 independent contractors. Our agency handles wages, applicable federal and state payroll taxes and withholding, Social Security and Medicare contributions, unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation premiums, payroll reports and W-2 forms. We also manage applicable California wage, overtime and break requirements for our employees. Families receive services from our agency rather than arranging a private caregiver’s payroll.
Our agency carries workers’ compensation coverage for eligible work-related employee injuries. Depending on the claim and applicable policy, benefits may include medical treatment, wage replacement and rehabilitation. Contact our office promptly about a workplace injury or incident so it can be documented and directed to the appropriate process.
We verify driver’s license information for caregivers providing transportation. Our agency’s auto liability arrangements address approved client transportation, including agency-related use of caregiver-owned or client-owned vehicles as applicable. Coverage can depend on the vehicle, driver, trip, underlying auto policy and policy terms. Ask our office to explain the arrangements before transportation starts; do not assume one policy replaces every vehicle owner’s insurance.
Yes. Contact our office at (619) 736-4677 to discuss coverage information, a property concern, a care-related incident or a transportation question. We can explain the relevant reporting steps and help direct the concern for review. Coverage and payment depend on the applicable bond or policy, its terms, limits and exclusions, and the facts of the claim.
Ask who employs the caregiver, how payroll and employment coverage are handled, what bonding and liability insurance are carried, how transportation is arranged, and how the agency handles screening, training, supervision and complaints. Independently verify the agency license and ask for explanations of any coverage you do not understand.
